LETTER: Sensible seating for comfort rest

Over the years I have urged Swan Walk and other Horsham town retailers to improve opportunities for people to be able ‘to take a breather’ by sitting down on suitable seats.
Older folk and those who are less mobile need to be able to pause while shopping. The seating in Swan Walk is ghastly, backless, uneven and downright awkward. The management has not responded positively to any of my approaches or to the concerns expressed by others.

Hide AdCommercial factors appear to want to keep people moving, so basic benches are the order of the day.
This is a short sighted approach to people who want to enjoy shopping as much as anyone else, these people suffer from varying ailments and simply need to take a little more time. It is not practical or fair to think that they should take these breaks in cafes.
There is much to be gained from looking after all customers especially those who need a little more help.
I have at various times called for every retailer to offer a designated space or simply a chair for those who need it.

Hide AdHorsham is a fabulous town and I would like it to extend its welcoming reputation by providing sensible seating that offers a comforting break for those who would otherwise be unable to explore the full range that our town has to offer.
Good seating in town, in our parks, at bus stops and around our green spaces matters.
There are some good examples but we do need to fill the obvious gaps.
Please support this national campaign and help to promote better seating in Horsham. Please see my Councillor Facebook Page.

Hide AdIn the last couple days I have commented on the increase in charge for the green garden waste bins and separately on the fortnightly collection of basic rubbish.
The cutbacks being made are not at all progressive, they could well lead to a reduction in the excellent standard of recycling that we have seen in Horsham District over the last few years.
It is highly likely that policies being pursued by WSCC tips and the imminent changes at HDC will lead to additional fly-tipping, bonfires and the unhealthy inconvenience of rotting rubbish particularly in the summer.
