I came to live in Oakhill Road in Horsham in 1946 and what a pleasant unspoilt area it was then! Burford Road had green lawns in between the road and the pavement on one side which are now just rutted patches of mud.

There was a beautiful oak-beamed house opposite us with five barred gate and large oak tree in which a barn owl would often perch and there were shops of almost every trade in the vicinity.

Two doors away there was a cobbler and at the other end of the road was a grocer and an excellent baker.

A few steps more and there was a Post Office - just past Jack Standing’s farm where he kept the horse which delivered the milk to your door.

Almost everything that you needed daily could be found in this area including the most important to many, the chemist shop in Oakhill Road.

The chemist was Mr Larcombe who was famous for his own special cough mixture, Larcombe’s Lemon Lingtus. He was always a conspicuous figure in his very smart (1920s?) suit.

We must be very grateful that this pharmacy, unlike all of the other pre-mentioned establishments has survived the years and is now double its original size after adding the previous sweet shop next door some years ago.
