Join the medieval madness this bumper bank holiday

There will be medieval merry-making aplenty on the Abbey Green on Sunday and Monday (May 29 and 30) between 10am and 5pm. Battle’s resident jester, Devil Sticks Peat, will make a welcome return to the event, creating mayhem with a mix of juggling, jesting, and general tomfoolery. Medieval warfare will be demonstrated by Hands on History who will offer the opportunity to try on suits of armour and handle medieval weapons. Later, the group will demonstrate medieval surgery techniques – and hopefully not offering visitors to try their hand themselves. The 1066 Lacemakers will demonstrate the delicate art of lacemaking while potters will offer the opportunity for young ones to try throwing a pot, plus there will be games and facepainting for the young and young at heart. There will also be exhibitors offering tempting trinkets, local traders providing tasty food, ales and wines, and the Battel Bonfire Boyes’ hog roast. On Monday, the May Queen, her princesses and dancers from Battle and Langton School, will lead the parade down the High Street at 1pm, accompanied by the Section 5 Drummers. After the crowning of the May Queen at 1.30pm, the children will show the adults how maypole dancing should be done. The event is part of a bumper Bank Holiday weekend in Battle, which kicks off tonight with ELF (Every Last Friday), with live music at venues around the town. Saturday will see a performance from the Streets of Battle entertainers while Battle Museum will host a Birds of Prey event from Saturday to Monday, 10am to 4.30pm.
