A vet’s practice that expanded this year to open its second branch has carried out the first operation at its new premises – by extracting several teeth from a much-loved dog and helping to put an extra spring in its step

With no waiting list to delay similar non-urgent but necessary treatment to help animals feel better, pet owners now have convenient reliable, modern facilities and services at the Mewes Vets’ newest clinic in Rottingdean.

Established by highly experienced vet Julia Mewes, who also runs an established practice at Haywards Heath, the new branch is part of a business that is entirely independent with no links to big corporate chains and shareholders.

On-site x-rays

Instead it focuses purely on pets and their owners and can provide lifelong care, support and advice to customers old and new.

For the added ease of patients, x-rays will soon be carried out on site where machines, lead wall linings and a radiation-proof door have now been installed to make the process safe for all. And the use of an in-house lab means blood and urine samples can be analysed quickly and any next steps promptly taken.

Cuddles and treats

Alongside its diagnostic capabilities, the Mewes Vets place great emphasis on keeping animals – and their owner – as worry-free as possible. Initiatives such as the soothingly named cuddle therapy for potentially anxious or aggressive adult dogs is one way the team aims to normalise a visit to the clinic and reduce possible problems for all concerned.

Available by arrangement, owners can take their dogs to the practice as part of its regular walk. Once there the lucky pet receives treats, cuddles and those all important scratches in just the right places to put them at ease.

“By setting up frequent visits where nothing scary like claw clipping or injections happen, dogs get used to being here and a lot of the upset disappears which really helps when they’re treated in future,” explained Julia.

Puppy parties

When it comes to teaching younger dogs new tricks, it doesn’t get much cuter than the twice weekly puppy parties which are held to help socialise little ones and introduce them to other dogs and people. The sessions are held at 5.30pm on Tuesdays and 9am on Saturdays and booking is essential.

Like Haywards Heath, the Rottingdean clinic shares the same ‘one pet, one vet’ approach to animal care so everyone can get to know each other and feel comfortable throughout.

Getting to know you

With only rare exceptions, such as holidays or medical emergencies, owners can book in with their usual vet for each appointment to ensure continuity of care and a personal understanding of their animal companions.
