More than 300 competitors tackled the testing trio of water, wheels and willpower in Sunday's second annual Chichester triathlon.
However, this year the younger generation were also hoping for glory in the first junior aquathon.

The triathlon consisted of a challenging 600m swim, followed by an exhausting 42km bike ride and a gruelling 10km run and proved a big hit with competitors.

The aquathon was also a success with children swimming distances ranging from 66m with a 600m run in Year 3 to 400m with a 3k run in Year 10.

The event was organised and delivered by Chichester District Council's sport and leisure team, and Westgate Leisure.

Portfolio holder for culture and sport Cllr Nick Thomas said, "What a wonderful community event. Congratulations to our winners and all those who took part, particularly the young competitors in our first junior aquathon."

Chris Birch, of Eaststreet cycles.com, won the senior male category in 1hr 56min 35sec.

Chichester Tric Club member Mary Campbell took the ladies' honours in 2hr 21min 29sec.

Those completing the course were rewarded with free salad and fruit boxes courtesy of corporate sponsors Natures Way Foods.

Support also came from Chichester College, Global Scaffolding, Nutbourne Construction. and more than 100 volunteers.

"Roll on Triathlon 2009," said Cllr Thomas.

Next year's event is on Sunday, July 19.

For a full list of results from the triathlon see the Observer, on sale July 24.
